Itzetl Vixtha Teoba

Digital Scholars Program Student Leader, University of Washington Bothell

Interview by Betty Yinges

August 10, 2023

Itzetl Vixtha Teoba, a UWB senior majoring in Media & Communication Studies, was part of the first cohort of students in the Digital Scholars Program. Vixtha was drawn to the program for the interdisciplinary skills and experiences it offered. She then became the student assistant for the next cohort of the Digital Scholars Program. In this interview, I asked Itzetl about her transition from being a student in the program to being a student assistant for the program.

Q. What is your favorite aspect of the Digital Scholars Program?

Itzetl: Learning about this program for the first time as a student and now seeing how much it’s improved as a student assistant for the new cohort is my favorite part. The program provides you with more hands-on experience in digital skills that you might not have learned or explored in your major.

Q. How do you think the program benefits college students?

Itzetl: It helps students with organization and understanding their goals better. Beginning college, I wanted to go into Computer Science, but I later decided that’s not what I wanted. With this program, you're not limited to doing one thing, you have the opportunity to learn different skills and figure out what’s right for you.

Q. What advice do you have for future students going into the program?

Itzetl: Be open to learning more about yourself as a student and as a professional person, you're going to have a lot of faculty teaching you. Provide feedback about your experiences, that’s what makes the programs the best! Be open. As a student assistant, I have gained invaluable experiences that have allowed me to learn, expand my network, uncover new job opportunities, and establish a strong support system from the staff. Connecting with other facilities has also been a significant aspect of my journey, providing me with valuable insights and perspectives. The time spent in this role has enabled me to grow and develop as a professional, honing my skills and improving my overall competency.

Q: Unlocking Opportunities: Transitioning from Student to Student Assistant

Transitioning from a student role to that of a student assistant has afforded me the opportunity to gain valuable experiences, expand my network, access job opportunities, establish a strong support system from the faculty members, connect with other members of the campus community, manage my time effectively, and enhance my professional growth.

Itzetl’s advice for future students:

Be open to learn more about you as a student and as a professional person.
